Bringing a legacy brand up to speed without leaving its history behind

When a business has spent decades building a reputation, refreshing its brand requires a careful balance. How do you introduce something new without losing the recognition and trust that have taken years to establish?

That was the challenge with Commander Agriculture, a third-generation Australian business known for its locally manufactured grain and livestock handling equipment.

Commander wasn’t looking to reinvent itself. The products, people and reputation were already well established. What needed attention was how the business presented itself to the market.

A reputation worth protecting

In agriculture, reputation carries weight. Farmers invest in equipment they know will perform, often returning to the same manufacturers across generations.

Commander had built that trust through decades of supplying reliable, Australian-made equipment. However, its existing identity no longer reflected the scale, capability or quality of the business behind it.

The challenge was to modernise the brand without making it feel unfamiliar. We wanted existing customers to recognise the Commander they had always known, while presenting a stronger, more confident identity to the next generation.

Understanding what makes a brand valuable

Sometimes the strongest part of a brand isn’t its visual identity. It’s the reputation that sits behind it.

For our Art Director, Cain, the connection to Commander was particularly familiar. Having grown up on a cattle farm that used Commander cattle crushes, he understood the products and the level of trust farmers placed in them.

That firsthand perspective helped reinforce an important part of our approach. We weren’t creating a new story for Commander. We were finding a better way to communicate the one it had already built.

Making the identity work harder

Our approach focused on refining rather than replacing.

We simplified and rebalanced the existing wordmark, introducing a cleaner, more considered identity that retained the familiarity of the Commander name.

From there, we developed a cohesive visual system designed to work across the many environments in which the brand appears. From machinery and equipment to signage, printed collateral and digital platforms, every element needed to be practical, recognisable and consistent.

The result is a more unified brand presence that feels established, capable and distinctly Commander.

Built on what was already there

A successful brand refresh doesn’t always mean making the biggest visual change. Sometimes it’s about understanding what shouldn’t change.

For Commander Agriculture, the value was already there in the equipment, the people and the reputation built over generations.

Our role was to bring the identity up to the same standard, creating a brand that respects where the business has come from while giving it a stronger presence for where it’s heading.
