Making Ferret Feel at Home Underground

A strong identity needs to do more than look good on a presentation board. It needs to work where the brand actually lives.
For Ferret, a new underground pump product line, that meant creating an identity with enough character to stand out, while making sure it could carry through into the practical, technical material that supports the product every day.
A character built for underground
At the centre of the identity is the Ferret mascot.
Ferrets are small, agile and persistent by nature. We pushed those characteristics further, creating something tougher and more ferocious, with an attitude that felt appropriate for underground mining.
The goal was to make the character feel like it belonged there.
Rather than treating the mascot as a decorative element, it became an important part of the brand’s personality. Distinctive enough to be recognised, flexible enough to work across different applications, and grounded in the environment the product was designed for.

Designing for where the brand actually works
Building the identity was only part of the job.
A product brand like Ferret has to communicate in a practical environment. Specifications matter. Performance matters. Information needs to be clear, accessible and easy to navigate.
That makes something as functional as a product data sheet an important brand touchpoint.
The data sheets needed to present detailed technical information without losing the confidence and personality established by the wider identity. Typography, hierarchy, imagery, layout and brand elements all had a job to do, giving technical content structure while making each document immediately recognisable as Ferret.
It’s a different design challenge to creating the mascot, but no less important.

Identity in application
We believe a brand becomes stronger through use.
Logos, colours, typography and characters establish the visual language, but it’s the application of those elements that turns an identity into something useful and recognisable.
For Ferret, the mascot gives the brand its character. The product collateral gives that character somewhere to work.
Together, they create an identity that feels considered without getting in the way of the information customers actually need.
Because good branding isn’t something that sits separately from the product or the business behind it.
It should feel at home wherever it’s put to work.
